Passive investing using ETFs is often viewed as an alternative to active fund management. But that is changing. Over the last two years US fund-of-fund managers have increased their usage of ETFs by 100%, according to a recent study by Greenwich Associates.1 In addition, 58% of institutions participating in the study described their use of ETFs as generally strategic in nature. Clearly, ETFs are becoming an integral part of active investors' portfolios.
